Global Financial Insurance
  • Open enrollment begins November 1.
  • The deadline to enroll for coverage that starts January 1 can be as early as mid-December, and the federal rules have been changing. Confirm this year’s exact date at HealthCare.gov or with our office before you wait.
  • Arizona uses the federal Marketplace, HealthCare.gov.
  • Outside open enrollment you can enroll only with a qualifying life event (see below).

Many people qualify for financial help that lowers the monthly premium. Your household size and expected income for the coverage year determine what you can get, and the amount can change from one year to the next, so it is worth re-checking every year.

Some people with lower incomes also qualify for AHCCCS, Arizona’s Medicaid program, which you can apply for at any time of year.

  • Plans come in Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum tiers. Lower tiers usually mean a lower monthly premium but more out of pocket when you use care; higher tiers are the reverse.
  • Silver plans are the only tier that can include extra cost-sharing reductions for qualifying incomes.
  • Check that your doctors, hospitals, and prescriptions are covered before you enroll.
  • Review your plan every year instead of letting it renew automatically: premiums, networks, and drug lists change.

Certain life events open a Special Enrollment Period, usually 60 days, even outside open enrollment. Common examples include losing other health coverage, getting married, having or adopting a baby, and moving to a new area.

  • Names, birth dates, and Social Security numbers (or immigration document numbers) for everyone applying.
  • An estimate of your household income for the coverage year, and recent pay stubs or tax records.
  • Information about any job-based coverage offered to your household.

When does ACA open enrollment start?

It starts November 1 each year. The last day to enroll for January 1 coverage can fall in mid-December, so confirm the current deadline at HealthCare.gov or with our office.

Can I get ACA coverage outside open enrollment?

Only if you have a qualifying life event, such as losing other coverage, marriage, a new baby, or a move. You usually have 60 days from the event.

What if my income changes during the year?

Update your Marketplace application. Your financial help is based on your income estimate, so reporting changes helps avoid surprises at tax time.

What is AHCCCS?

AHCCCS is Arizona’s Medicaid program. People whose income is low enough can apply at any time of year instead of waiting for open enrollment.

Do I need to re-enroll every year?

Plans may renew automatically, but it is worth reviewing each year because prices, networks, and your own income can change.
